Arne Slot has greatest-ever start to Liverpool tenure after ninth win

Arne Slot says he hopes that Liverpool fans remember him in 10 years’ time for more than the greatest start to a manager’s career at their club in its 132 years of eventful history, although for now it seems to be enough.
This was another formidable Liverpool performance, which showed just why they can be so hard to beat. In midfield Ryan Gravenberch was impressive and, alongside the Dutchman, the Liverpudlian Curtis Jones meant that this was a dominant afternoon. Liverpool finished the game at the top of the Premier League albeit nursing a couple of injuries.
Goalkeeper Alisson Becker was withdrawn injured in the second half, with what looked like a muscle tear in his right leg that may require some time out. His deputy, Caoimhin Kelleher, was missing with illness and so Czech 23-year-old Vitezslav Jaros was given an unlikely debut from the bench. Alexis Mac Allister also came off at half-time but it is Alisson, so crucial to the way in which Liverpool play, who will be the key concern.

Slot also substituted Mohamed Salah in the second half – a rarity for a man of his standing, but it had undoubtedly been a quiet afternoon for him too. Liverpool had sliced through Palace in the ninth minute with Diogo Jota getting ahead of Trevoh Chalobah to reach Cody Gakpo’s cross. There were moments when it felt that more goals were inevitable but in the end Liverpool proved just as hard for Palace to break down.
There was one standout complaint for the home side, when in the second half Virgil van Dijk took Marc Guehi’s arm in both his hands and put enough force in to pull him down. Referee Simon Hooper, who had a difficult second half, may not have seen it but if that was the case the VAR, David Coote, decided there was no reason to change the decision.

Oliver Glasner profoundly disagreed. The Palace manager is yet to register his team’s first win of the season and is trying not to linger on these details, but this was a difficult one to take. “There is no [hard] decision to make,” he said of the Van Dijk incident afterwards. His team had come back into it in the second half, especially when he introduced the experience of Will Hughes and Jean-Philippe Mateta from the bench.
But it takes a lot to break down this Liverpool side. “We could see the quality of Liverpool [in the first half] and how well they played,” Glasner said. “It is how they move and make runs in behind that threaten you. They deserved their lead. The reaction for us in the second half is how we need to play. That encourages all of us.”
Palace started with a five-man defence that meant much territory was conceded in return for a sense of security. The home team had scored within 22 seconds when Ismaila Sarr ran onto Adam Wharton’s ball and crossed for Eddie Nketiah. The latter had strayed offside and the front three, Eberechi Eze included, never again threatened Liverpool to that extent. They were too easily passed through for the Liverpool goal, which began with Konstantinos Tsimikas’s incisive pass.

In midfield, Gravenberch had been influential and his surging runs and Liverpool’s greater numbers made it difficult for Wharton and Jefferson Lerma. “He [Gravenberch] is really comfortable with the ball,” Slot said. “Every time he knows what to do with it. He is very comfortable turning away from his man. If you made a highlight reel maybe you would just show the offensive work. But he is tall, he can run and he is strong in duels.”
There were other chances for Jota, a cross from Gravenberch in the first half and then a header after the break. Yet by the end there was more of a game with Hughes giving his side energy and also Mateta a more forceful presence. Alisson came off with 13 regulation minutes left and Palace failed to test Jaros in a meaningful way.
The goalkeeper joined the club in 2017 from Slavia Prague as a 16-year-old and, through four loans including Sturm Graz last season, may have wondered if he would ever play for Liverpool in a competitive game. In the end he barely had a shot to save.
Slot’s record in his first months as Liverpool manager now stands at 10 games in three competitions and nine wins. Not even Bill Paisley managed that. The defeat by Nottingham Forest is the only one that went awry. The Dutch coach must take satisfaction that his opening months at Anfield have passed with so little comment, in contradiction to life for his compatriot at Old Trafford. “It’s quite special, if you look at the managers Liverpool have had,” Slot said afterwards. “I do hope the fans remember me for more than this.”
He said once again that he had inherited a good staff and squad of players. The challenge will be to give them the game time that will keep them all interested in the weeks ahead. Chelsea on the Sunday that follows the international break will be the biggest challenge they have faced yet this season.

Should Crystal Palace have been awarded a penalty with around 20 minutes left? van Dijk certainly holds onto Guehi and was taking a risk. There was an incident a couple of weeks ago in the West Ham vs Chelsea game when Crysencio Summerville wanted a penalty but that was not given either. Last weekend Liverpool wanted a penalty against Wolves as Rayan Ait-Nouri pulled back Mohamed Salah in the box but again no penalty was given. Arne Slot has just been speaking to TNT and believes it was not a penalty as Guehi would not have got to the ball. Arne Slot will be worried by Alisson’s injury in the final quarter of the game. He knew straight away that he was done for the day and was replaced by Vitezslav Jaros, who came on for his Premier League debut. Liverpool’s usual number two  Caoimhin Kelleher was missing today due to illness. The international break is now upon us and you would imagine that Alisson will not be joining up with Brazil. Now the question will be how serious is it? He did not look comfortable walking along the sidelines at full-time.

Huge concern for Liverpool. Alisson clears it out of play and immediately goes down, clutching his hamstring. He was not happy with Alexander-Arnold for playing it back to him when he did not need to. Liverpool’s back-up Kelleher is missing due to illness so it will be Vitezslav Jaros who is set to replace Alisson. Jaros had a good spell on loan at Sturm Graz last season.
The yellow cards are coming out in force now as Nketiah is the latest player booked for tugging Gakpo back.
Crystal Palace have a free-kick in a good area on the right but Sarr is booked for showing the imaginary yellow card after being fouled by Tsimikas. Eze sends it in but Liverpool head away.
Hughes is the second Crystal Palace player in quick succession to be booked for a foul on Jones.

Lerma is penalised for a foul on Tsimikas and is shown a yellow card. Tsimikas went up for the header and Lerma knew exactly what he was doing, backing into him and causing a pretty horrible landing for the Greek left-back. That could have caused a serious injury to Tsimikas.
Eze strikes a shot sweetly from the edge of the box and Alisson makes the save. Crystal Palace have a corner from the right. They take it short and Eze sends it to the back post. Chalobah flicks it goalwards and Alisson punches away. Guehi wanted a penalty after he claimed he was pulled back by van Dijk. VAR checks it but sticks with the on-field decision.

Good work by Gakpo on the left sets up a chance for Szoboszlai outside the box. The Hungarian strikes it well but it is straight at Henderson.
Chance for Crystal Palace. Liverpool lose possession in their own half. Mateta lays it off to Nketiah at the edge of the box and his effort is saved by Alisson. While this game is still just 1-0 all it would take is one moment and Crystal Palace would be level despite Liverpool’s dominance.
How have Liverpool not scored more than one here? Alexander-Arnold plays a delightful ball in and picks out Jota, who is no more than around six yards out but somehow heads wide. Liverpool should be at least three or four goals ahead.
Chalobah fouls Salah and Liverpool will have a free-kick in a good area, around 25 yards out from the Crystal Palace goal in a central position.
Oliver Glasner has decided now is time for changes as Mateta is coming on for Mitchell. A striker on for a left-back so that could lead to a change in shape. Glasner is also taking off Wharton and bringing on Hughes in his place.
Nearly 2-0 to Liverpool. van Dijk picks out Salah in behind the Crystal Palace defence with a fantastic ball. Salah takes a touch and then tries to beat Henderson, but the Crystal Palace goalkeeper makes a crucial save.
Liverpool work it really well inside the Crystal Palace half. Szoboszlai finds Salah on the right-hand side of the box and the Egyptian lays it into the path of the overlapping Alexander-Arnold. The England right-back drives the ball across from the byline and Henderson sticks out his leg to clear it.
Liverpool are controlling proceedings at the start of this second half and continue to dominate possession. Arne Slot will want that second goal, which they should already have.
Gakpo cuts in from the left and tries to pick out Jota or Salah in the box but there is slightly too much on it and Henderson comes out to catch it. A little bit less on that ball and it would have been a great chance for Liverpool to double their lead.

Liverpool win another corner as Guehi does really well to deny Mac Allister after a great dinked ball by Gakpo. A seventh corner for the visitors in this first half and this one is better. Alexander-Arnold finds van Dijk, who cannot keep his header down and it goes over Henderson’s bar.
Jota’s cross from the left-hand side of the box is blocked by Guehi and goes behind for a Liverpool corner on the left. Alexander-Arnold swings it in but again Crystal Palace win the initial header and earn themselves a free-kick anyway. Liverpool have not really taken advantage of their corners so far, hardly ever making the first contact.
Liverpool should be 2-0 up. Salah and Gravenberch do brilliantly down the right and the latter sends in a great ball from the right. He picks out Jota, who you think will slot home from eight yards out but gets it all wrong, so much so it is kept in by Tsimikas on the byline a long way wide of the goal.

Eze sends in a free-kick into the box and, with Lerma not far behind him, Tsimikas takes no risks and heads behind for a Crystal Palace corner. Eze swings it in from the right and is headed away by Gakpo.
The first booking of the game goes to Gakpo for a challenge on Sarr.
Alexander-Arnold sends in a first-time stinging shot which forces Henderson into a good save down to his right. Clyne has the opportunity to clear the ball before it goes behind for a corner but he leaves it too late and gifts the visitors their fifth corner of the game so far. Alexander-Arnold finds Gakpo at the near post, but his flicked onward header goes over the bar.
Gakpo cuts in from the left and tries to whip a shot into the far corner but he does not get it right and it comfortably misses the target.

This could be an early change for the home side as Munoz has gone down with a muscle injury, perhaps to his calf. The medical staff are out to treat him.

He lays it across and it looks like Mac Allister will have the chance to poke it past Henderson but he seemingly leaves it, perhaps thinking a teammate was behind him, and Henderson sticks out a leg to clear. Jones then concedes a free-kick and Crystal Palace can escape their own box.

With their first chance of the game the visitors take the lead. Tsimikas plays a great pass into the left-hand channel to find Gakpo, who makes a great run. The Dutchman plays it across first time to the centre of the area and Jota gets to it first ahead of Chalobah to poke home past Henderson. A goal for Jota on his 100th start for Liverpool in all competitions.

Crystal Palace secured a deal right towards the end of the summer transfer window to take Trevoh Chalobah on loan from Chelsea and today marks his debut for Oliver Glasner’s side. Chalobah is set to be part of a back three for the home side today alongside Marc Guehi and Maxence Lacroix.

Curtis Jones is one of four changes to the Liverpool side from their 2-0 win over Bologna in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Jones comes in for Dominik Szoboszlai, with Kostas Tsimikas, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo also being brough into the starting team.
Arne Slot says he has been warned of the perils of Saturday’s 12.30pm at Crystal Palace as it his first experience of an early kick-off immediately following a midweek Champions League game. That was famously a source of frustration for his predecessor.
“In general, I think the league where I’m coming from in Holland, they are more aware and try to help the teams that play in Europe more than it happens over here,” said Slot.
“But to be fair, I don’t think it has so much to do with the 12.30 kick-off. For me it has to do (with) the fact that every away game is difficult.
“Ten out of 19 away games last season didn’t lead to a win. So you can then argue if it’s 12.30 or is it just difficult to play an away game? If 12.30 was a difficult time to perform then I’m a really stupid manager because we train every day at 12 o’clock. I don’t see the idea behind it being that difficult performing at that time.”

Arne Slot says an upgrade on the club’s away form is the key to keeping the pace in a title fight with Manchester City and Arsenal as he seeks to maintain a 100 per cent success rate on the road.
Liverpool have only failed to win one of their nine games since Slot took over – a home loss to Nottingham Forest – but having studied why his side fell away in last year’s title race he has pinpointed an inferior away record to the main contenders.
The champions collected ten points more than Liverpool on their travels, while Arsenal took eight more. Liverpool’s home record, in contrast, was the best in the Premier League.
“If you are purely looking at it from a data point of view then it was a 10-point difference to City and the (overall home and away) gap was nine. If you look at the home form of both teams then the £10m question is why is this?” said Slot.
“I think there are areas we have to improve and that is why it is so important to take control over every game, not only the home games but the away ones too. Just to be very dominant in away games. That is why I wasn’t very happy with the first 20 minutes at Wolves.
“I think the home and away games of Liverpool are quite similar but in general it is tougher to play away. Everyone is looking forward to it the whole week. Everybody is talking about, ‘Liverpool are coming,’ – the players are all up for it and that is why it is tough.”

Good morning and welcome to coverage from the Premier League as Crystal Palace host Liverpool at Selhurst Park, with Arne Slot’s side having the chance to go four points clear at the summit. Liverpool currently sit top of the table, having won five out of six so far in the Premier League. Since a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, their only defeat of the season to date, they have won five straight games in all competitions, including Wednesday night’s 2-0 victory over Bologna in the Champions League, with Arne Slot’s side making it two wins from two in that competition.
For Crystal Palace, it has been a challenging start to the new season as they are still without a win in the league and currently sit in the relegation zone in 18th place with just Southampton and Wolves below them in the table.
